Kai Roukonen Floor lamp

Floor lamp model "Palace" brass and acrylic Height approx. 144 cm , ø 42 cm

Made by ORNO OY Helsinki.

Designed by Kai Ruokonen for the Palace Hotel in Helsinki and also used for the Vaakuna Hotel Helsinki. Good vintage condition with minor signs of use and a nice patina. The Palace Hotel was built for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics by architects Viljo Revell and Keijo Petäjä in the style of an ocean liner. Kai Ruokonen is said to have designed the "PALACE" lighting series for the occasion.

This floor lamp would be a part of this line. Table lamps and chandeliers from this series are also known.

Several sources attribute the design of this lamp to the year 1952. We are cautious with this dating. Having seen pictures and footage from the 1950s of the Palace Hotel interior , we cannot confirm this. However, these large luxury hotels are always being renovated and remodelled, and a new look in the early 70s or late 60s would make sense. There is a picture of the hotel restaurant showing an impressive array of a variation of this lamp model that appears to date from the 1970s.
